    BLINDING?

Remedy unknown to the 16 provers, supervisors and master prover

    PHARMACY OF REMEDY IN PROVING

    Remedia pharmacy, Austria

    Description of the substance

A homeopathic drug proving- now termed a homeopathic pathogenetic trial- of Solanum malacoxylon, a South American nightshade

Eine homöopathische Arzneimittelprüfung von Solanum malacoxylon, Nachtschatten- Gewächs aus Südamerika

The proving will be published in the coming Austrian homeopathic journal Documenta Homoeopathica No. 29/ 2012

The foto is kindly offered by Stephan Marti, all rights reserved to the owner.

Dr. Hildebrandt kindly offered already the suggested rubrics for the homeopathic community

You find them in English below and in German language in the German section of the portal

Information about the proving will be available as well on his website (but is not yet in 6/11), please check Here if it is already posted. Dr. Hildebrandt published as well some cases treated successfully with this remedy (in German language).

Bibliography: Hildebrandt J. Solanum malacoxylon bei Tinnitus. Homöopath. Österr. 2011;1: S 19-22

    Description of the proving method:

It was a double (triple) blind C30 proving: finally 16 out of 35 homeopaths provided a protocol. Distribution: 12 female and 4 male provers. One woman received placebo (but provided symptoms compatible with those of the provers). 4 provers (25%) did not have any proving symptoms.

Blinding: I myself, as being the master prover did not participate in the proving. 7 so far either unproved remedies (6 plants and one chemical substance) or remedies, which had only very few symptoms listed in our Materia Medica were sent to Mag Robert Müntz, Remedia Pharmacy, Austria who chose one of those remedies, provided and encoded C 30 portions with numbers, including few placebos. All the provers, me as well, did not know who had received placebo or which remedy was chosen. All provers had to note their original own symptoms during for 4 days before starting with the proving.

Method: Intake during 4 days in a row, starting with 4 globules, every day one more globule, with the advice to stop the intake as soon as symptoms would occur. The 4 provers, who did not develop any symptoms prolonged their intake for 2 further days, taking 2 times a day and then 3 times a day 5 globules – without better results however.

The even numbered bottles should be moistened in a spoon of water before intake (according to Organon), the uneven numbered should be taken directly. I could not find any difference, though the amount of provers might have been too low to detect any advantage of either method.

Analysis: After I had received all protocols, the new symptoms were listed in a word table. A few provers (young homeopaths) had already translated some of their documented symptoms into rubrics, which I recommended, for they can then better adjust the symptoms to the best fitting pre-existing rubric.

Then the list of rubrics together with the list of the revealed seven possible proving substances has been sent to all provers and the other supervisors. Using this material, they were asked to try to find out which remedy they had proven. Unfortunately I received only two responses in the period of two weeks. However, both of them found the correct plant. One homeopath used the rubrics to compare them with the repertory, which plant family came first. The other did not use the repertory, but gave a perfect analysis, why the character of the symptoms fitted best to the family of the Solanaceae!

Despite the tiny number of analysts, this, to my knowledge, is the first support to the validity of plant family analysis in a blinded clinical proving of an almost unknown plant.

    The substance:

Solanum malacoxylon, syn. glaucophyllum, glaucescens, glaucum is a South American solanacea, causing a cattles disease in Argentina („Enteque seco“) and Brazil („Espichamento“): the Enzootic calcinosis. This is due to the presence of Cholecalciferol [1, 25 Dihydroxycholecalciferol, 1,25-(OH)2 D3] in the plant. If the cattle starves and eats the leaves over a long period, it gets calcifications in its inner organs and muscles, showing the symptoms of a Vit D intoxication.

In 1981 Dr. Gilbert Benyamine from Lyon had the idea to use this remedy in D6 – D30 for several months in 19 cases of periarthritis humeroscapularis with success. It was used for this indication in France, but this is the first homeopathic proving to my knowledge.

The proving did not support the indication of shoulder pains, but the clinical use in my experience does support this indication and others very well.
