Description of the substance

Colourless crystals, usually needle like, odourless; taste saline and bitter. Effloresces in warm dry air, very soluble in water, soluble in alcohol. Contains not less than 99.5 percent not more than the equivalent of 100.5 per cent if MgSO4 calculated with reference to the substance dried to constant weight at 300.

Termed Epsom salt because it is contained in large quantities in the saline waters of Epsom, a small town in the neighborhood of London, England. To have the sulphate of magnesia pure, wash the sulphate of the shops, filter the solution and then crystallize. We make a watery solution of the crystals.  

Magnesium sulfate, MgSO4, is a colourless, crystalline substance formed by the reaction of magnesium hydroxide with sulfur dioxide and air. A hydrate form of magnesium sulfate called kieserite, MgSO4·H2O, occurs as a mineral deposit.

In industry magnesium sulfate is used in the manufacture of cements and fertilizers and in tanning and dyeing; in medicine it serves as a purgative.
Among the organometallic compounds of magnesium are the important Grignard reagents, composed of an organic group (e.g., alkyls and aryls), a halogen atom other than fluorine, and magnesium (see Grignard reagent). These are used in the production of many other kinds of organometallic compounds.
Magnesium also is a constituent of chlorophyll, in which it apparently plays a role similar to that of iron in hemoglobin.
