manganum carbonicum

from the Latin magnes=magnet,or magnesia nigri=black magnesia,

Traditional name

German:Mangan ,

Used parts

prepared from manganese dioxid

Mn(C2H3O2)4H20  Solution of manganum aceticum
MnCO3 trituration of manganum carbonate
heavy Metal,Inorganic,Column seven

Original proving

Proved and introduced by Hahnemann; Materia Medica Pura Vol. II,114; Allen: Encyclopedia Materia medica, Vol. VI,151; Clarke; A Dictionary if Practical Materia Medica, Vol.VI,400; Hering; Guiding Symptoms, Vol. VII, 72.

Description of the substance

The metal Manganese was isolated in 1774 in the year Priestly discovered Oxygen. Recognized by SCheele ,Bergmann and others as an element and isolated by John Gahn.Sources:Most  abundant ores are pyrolusite (MnO2),psilomelane (BaH2O)2Mn5O10) and rhodochrosite (MnCo3) .
It was introduced into the Materia medica by Hahnemann ,who made provings of the carbonate and the  acetat. The symptoms of the two have not been kept separate.
Manganese is a  metal having a remarkable affinity for and in some respects a close resemblance to iron of which it is an extremenly frequent associate. Its medicinal as well as its physical relationship with iron is very close. Mang. is closely associated with iron and like iron Mang. causes anemia with destruction of red blood  corpuscles.

Manganese carbonate: White powder but  acquires a light  brown colour on exposure to air.
Insoluble in water: soluble in dilute hydrochloric acid. Contains not less than 44 per cent and not more than the equivalent of 48.0 per cent of Mn with reference to the substance dried at 105o to constant weight.

Identification: Yields reactions characteristic of manganous salts and carbonates H.P.I. Vol. I, 220. Manganous  acetate:Pale - red, transparant crystals. Odourless. Soluble in water and in alcohol. prepared from managanese dioxide. Contains not less than 99.0 per cent of Mn C4O4H6 4H2O with reference to the substance dried on anhydrous calcium chloride to constant weight.
Identification: Yields the reactions characteristic of manganese and of acetates.
Specific gravity: 1.5 to 1.59.
Manganum is just like Magnesium derived from Magnesia, a part of the Greek province Thessalia. Magnes or magnet has the same root and Manganum contains pyrosylit which has magnetic properies.
In the Periodic Table of Elements Mn has the Atomic Number 25,Group 7, Period 4
After Ferrum it is the most common metal in the upper crust of the earth.
Mn bonds with many different elements, because its electronic charge can vary between 1+, 2+, 3+,4+, 5+ and 7+.
The colours of its different  compounds also vary greatly. Tiles and stones get their brown colour from Mn02.
