The flowers and leaves kill dogs, asses, mules, and very many of other four footed beasts: but if men drink them in wine they are a remedy against the bitings of Serpents, and the rather if Rue be added.

Botanical uses.
Rhases and Avicenna recommend the leaves as an application to hard apostemes, and the juice for prurigo, scabies, and other disease, of the skin; in chronic pains of the back and limbs, as a plaster, and as a sternutatory in disease of the eyes. (Hamilton's Flora)

Un uso sempre in voga per queste piante riguarda la lotta agli ANIMALI VELENOSI, INSETTI E PARASSITI.
L’oleandro è usato per tenere lontani i topi, per curare la scabbia, l’Apocynum C. era usato per il morso di bestie selvatiche o di cani rabbiosi, la Rawolfia contro il veleno dei serpenti e degli insetti, per le infestazioni comuni quali pidocchi zecche venivano usati Alstonia e Taghinia Venenifera.
L’effetto medicamentoso che per primo viene indotto dall’assunzione ponderale delle droghe è quello PURGATIVO E STOMACICO . Vomito e nausea provocati da Oleander, Strophantus, Apocynum, e da tutte le piante della famiglia, assomigliando molto in questo alle cugine Loganiacee (Nux-v, Ign ecc) e Rubiacee (Ipeca, China). Naturalmente oltre a provocarlo, il vomito lo alleviano, ed ecco che Apocyn., le Vinche, Aspidosperma ed altri sono da secoli nei prontuari degli antiemetici, antigastritici.
Vi è anche un organotropismo per la pelle per cui ne han fatto utili rimedi per eczemi e pruriti (Eravatania, Tanghinia, Vinca Minor) mentre l’Echites è usata nei paesi tropicali come depilatorio, e l’ Aspidosperma per schiarire la pelle.
Vengono utilizzate come piante ORNAMENTALI DI STRAORDINARIA BELLEZZA : è molto diffuso sulle coste mediterranee l’Oleandro , mentre nelle terre originarie molte specie trovano posto nei tempi Buddisti quale offerta propiziatoria, oppure Thevetia Nerifolia che riempie le caldissime serre delle coltivazioni di piante belle e rare.
Da quasi tutte le specie si possono estrarre DROGHE utilizzate in tutte le latitudini come veleni o medicinali.
Ma è l’ ALTA TOSSICITA’ il carattere che più accomuna e distingue questa famiglia.
L’Oleandro è molto utilizzato, in tutto il Mediterraneo, come veleno per topi e insetti.
La Rawolfia in India, lo Strofanto e l’ Oleandro in occidente sono usati per le loro proprietà cardiotoniche fin dall’antichità
