Historically this tree has been known for its medicinal uses. Its pitch has been used by the Apache people for coughs. The Havasupai used the boiled leaves for various types of medicine. Others are known to have chewed the pitch for sore throats. An infusion of green bark from the douglas-fir has been used for both stomach and menstrual problems.
