In 1606 Lord North was riding back to the court in London from Brighton, on the coast, when he started to feel ill. An old woman offered him a drink of water from a spring. We now know that this water was full of iron. Lord North drank, and felt much better. On arrival in London he told all his friends at the royal court about this magic water. People then started coming to "take the waters". A community started to develop around the spring, and so the town of Tunbridge Wells was born.
